Stock Indexes around the world

Canada:

  • S&P/TSX Composite Index – is the benchmark Canadian index consisting of 250 companies, representing nearly 70% of the market capitalization of companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

China

  • SSE Composite Index – is a stock market index of all companies traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange

Europe:

  • CAC 40 – the benchmark French stock index consisting of the 40 largest French companies
  • DAX – the German index of the 30 major companies trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange
  • FTSE 100 – Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 consists of the 100 largest qualifying UK companies
  • IBEX 35 – is the stock index for the 35 most liquid companies on the Spanish Continuous Market

Hong Kong

  • Hang Seng – market capitalization based index of companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange

India:

  • SENSEX – consists of the 30 largest companies by market capitalization listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). SENSEX is short for Sensitive Index.
  • NIFTY 50 – consists of the 50 largest companies by market capitalization listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE)

Japan

  • Nikkei 225 – is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange
  • TOPIX – is the Tokyo Stock Price Index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange

Korea

  • KOSPI – this is the Korea Composite Stock Price Index or KOSPI, an index of all common stocks traded on the Stock Market Division of the Korea Exchange

Singapore

  • Straits Times Index – this is the benchmark index for the 30 largest capitalization-weighted companies on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

USA:

  • NASDAQ Composite – is the index for stocks traded on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, and is a capitalization-weighted index
  • DOW – the Dow Jones Industrial Average index of 30 largest companies by market capitalization listed on the NYSE, or the New York Stock Exchange
  • S&P 500 – a stock market index of the 500 largest corporations listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ. Its also referred to as the S&P index, and is often quoted as representing the performance of the large cap companies.
  • Russell 2000 – this is a stock market index of the bottom 2,000 stocks (companies) that comprise the Russell 3000 stock market index, and is thus considered an index representing small to mid cap (capitalization) stocks, and is often quoted as a gauge of the performance of the small to mid cap companies. This index is maintained by FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
  • Russell 3000 – this is a capitalization-weighted index representing nearly 98% of the US stock market. This index is also maintained by FTSE Russell, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
  • Wilshire 5000 – this is the capitalization-weighted Total Stock Market Index of all the stocks actively traded in the US stock markets. This index does not include ADRs (American Depository Receipts of Foreign companies) and Limited Partnerships, and is comprised of all stocks listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, and the American Stock Exchange. This index is maintained by Dow Jones & Company.
